Fun With Paradoxes

I came across this brief, entertaining and informative video on YouTube and decided to share it here. I also decided NOT to share it. However, I was only deciding NOT to share it with those who never watch it. Thus, you may decide for yourself whether I did or did not choose to share it with YOU. :)

Either way, it is a free and well meant offer of the video, backed up by a full provision of what is being offered (this is a Moderate Calvinist's inside joke for those of you who missed it).

The video begins with one of the classic paradoxes of the Greek philosopher Zeno, and then goes on to explore time travel, parallel universes, physics, mathematics, artificial intelligence, the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Quite an accomplishment for a mere six minutes!

St. Patrick's Confession (Video)

Here is a video featuring a professional reading of St. Patrick's "Confession," an autobiographical account written by the early Christian missionary and former slave who was used of God to win multitudes of converts in Ireland. This is well worth the 45 minutes. (I have no idea who the people in the photos are; perhaps they are related to the narrator).




Here is another video about St. Patrick. This one is quite a bit shorter, and also very well done (other than getting Patrick's birth date wrong by a few centuries!).



Obviously, there is much more to St. Patrick's Day than green beer . . .

Cornelius Van Til - "Why I Believe In God"

If you would like to know more about Dr. Cornelius Van Til, the father of presuppositional apologetics, you may find the following video useful. It contains the narration of a long letter written by Van Til to defend his belief in God, and more specifically the Christian faith. This is extremely thought provoking and insightful material, and even includes some interesting autobiographical information regarding Van Til's upbringing in Holland (you'll love his jokes about wooden shoes).

Here is a great example of Van Til's presuppositional method:
  

"... I propose to argue that unless God is back of everything you cannot find meaning in anything. I cannot even argue for belief in Him without already having taken Him for granted. And, similarly, I contend that you cannot argue against belief in Him unless you also first take Him for granted. Arguing about God's existence, I hold, is like arguing about air. You may affirm that air exists, and I that it does not, but as we debate the point we are both breathing air all the time."

I especially liked his critique of the presupposition behind rationalistic atheism:

"You have made the reach of your intellect the standard of what is possible or not possible. You have thereby virtually determined that you intend never to meet a fact that points to God. Facts, to be facts at all - facts, that is, with decent scientific and philosophic standing - must have your stamp instead of that of God upon them as their virtual creator."

Paul Washer Sermon Clip - The Work of the Holy Spirit

This is a bonus video for my fellow Charismatic Calvinists and Reformed continuationists. Paul Washer advises openness with regard to the demonstrative work of the Holy Spirit, and also warns against the charismatic "circus" that has become so prevalent in the modern day charismatic apostasy. He presents a beautiful balance of a Biblically grounded desire for the Spirit's ongoing work . . . if you can receive it.


NOTE: I don't think the words written on the screen, "Paul Washer believes in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, Contrary to most denominations in this nation," are warranted by the words recorded here. Paul Washer doesn't mention the "baptism" in the Holy Spirit. That phrase means different things to different people. I recommend listening to Washer's own worlds without paying attention to what has been added to the screen by the maker of the video.

This message was preached by Jonathan Christman at Heritage Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky. It brings the cross into sharp focus. If you don't want to face the reality of your sinful condition, the violent horror of divine judgment, and God's all-powerful, sacrificial love for sinners, don't watch this. 


On second thought, if you lack the desire for these things, definitely DON'T MISS this video.

If you are a parent seeking to glorify God by training your children in godliness and endeavoring to reach their hearts with the Gospel (or if you hope to become such a parent), you will be blessed and encouraged by this great interview. There are a lot of useful and enlightening principles here. Even if you aren't interested in parenting, you may find this video useful just because it is packed with wisdom.

I simply can't recommend this video highly enough! Enjoy.

Geoffrey Bingham on the Cross and Justification

I don't know much about this Anglican preacher from Australia, but I know I was deeply stirred by his teaching on the cross in this old video which has only received a few hundred views on YouTube. Bingham speaks with great insight about human depravity, and thus also with great insight into the grace of Christ. His side comments about the winds of doctrine that were floating around when this was filmed in 1985 are timeless.


He is the second preacher I've heard propose the unique (but, I believe, correct) theory that Christ's prayer in Gethsemane was a plea that He might survive the sufferings of the garden in order to go on to the cross - and not in any way a plea to avoid the cross as most commentators assume (note Bingham's comments around the 43 minute mark). The textual evidence for this position is striking if you take the time to study the passages closely.
